Seven Sports Bid for Team Fiji Olympic Slot

Team Fiji will depart for the Olympic Games in France July 11.

Chef de Mission for the team Sale Sorovaki said while some sports were still awaiting tournaments to qualify to the Olympics through, Fiji 7s rugby and sailing have automatically done after winning Gold at the recent Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands.

“Only 2 sports have qualified on merit and that is rugby 7s and sailing.” Sorovaki said.

“Sports that are hoping to qualify are weightlifting, boxing, archery, judo, tennis, athletics and swimming. For some of these sports some are going through Olympic qualifications and some are having theirs in the coming months, hoping to qualify for the 2024 Olympics.”

Fiji Swimming President Ben Rova told Mai TV today that there are several qualifying tournaments that their swimmers will be at beginning with the World Aquatics Championships in Doha, Qatar next week.

“We are sending Hansel McCaig and Kelera Mudunasoko who both won gold at the Pacific Games. This doesn’t mean that they are the only ones gunning for a qualifying time for the Olympics. There are two other championships well before the Olympics which we are hoping to send our swimmers to, as they are also Olympics qualifying ones also,” Rova said.

The Fiji Women’s soccer team, the Digicel Kulas are in Samoa also for the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament.

Manager Angeline Chua says they are ready for the games and the team is raring to go.

“They’ve prepared well, they’ve spent time together and are focusing now on the tournament and winning their games.”

Their first game is against American Samoa tomorrow.
