Heavy Rain Alert Issued for Parts of Fiji

February 6, 2024

A heavy rain alert has been issued for the Northern Division, Yasawa, Lau and Lomaiviti groups, and northern and eastern parts of Viti Levu.

Areas affected include Tavua, Rakiraki, Tailevu, Navua, Suva, Nausori, interior Ba-Ra-Naitasiri and Serua-Namosi.

The Fiji Weather Office says the alert stems from a trough of low pressure that is slow moving over the eastern parts and it is expected to be enhanced by Thursday with moderate potential for heavy rainfall over the heavy rain alert areas.

Occasional rain, heavy at times, and thunderstorms are expected over these areas from Thursday. Localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding of low-lying and flood-prone areas. Afternoon or evening thunderstorms which is very common during this time of the year have the potential to produce intense amount of rainfall within few hours.
