Heavy Rain and Strong Winds Forecast for Fiji

April 4, 2024

A heavy rain alert issued earlier for the Northern Division and Northern Lau Group in Fiji, has now been extended to cover the Interior and Northeastern regions of Viti Levu, Yasawa, Lomaiviti, and the rest of the Lau group.

The Fiji Meteorological Office attributes the conditions to an active trough of low pressure positioned north of Fiji, causing persistent cloud cover and rainfall in the affected areas.

This system is anticipated to gradually move southward, affecting additional regions including Viti Levu and its surrounding areas, Yasawa, Lomaiviti, and the Lau group. Residents in these areas should expect cloudy periods with showers, potentially intensifying into heavy rainfall tomorrow.

Flash Flooding

Localised heavy downpours may result in flash flooding, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas, leading to minor road disruptions and reduced visibility. However, intermittent breaks in the rain are possible.

A strong wind warning is also in effect for land areas of Taveuni, southern Bua, Yasawa, Kadavu, Lomaiviti, and the Lau group. East to southeast winds of up to 45 km/hr are expected.

For mariners, east-to-southeast winds of 20 to 25 knots with rough seas are forecasted. These conditions are anticipated to gradually ease by later Saturday.
