The Fijian Elections Office has approved 342 candidates for the 2022 General Election after 12 nominations were rejected and two were withdrawn from the 356 total nominations received.
FijiFirst and People’s Alliance have 55 candidates each, SODELPA and National Federation Party are equal on 54 each, Fiji Labour Party (FLP) 45, Unity Fiji 38, We Unite Fiji Party (WUF) 20, All People’s Party (APP) 14, New Generation Party (NGP) 5, and two independent candidates.
Females make up 16 percent of total candidates, as opposed to 24% that contested the 2018 polls. SODELPA has the most number of females with 11, FijiFirst, People’s Alliance and NFP fielding nine each, FLP with seven, Unity Fiji six, We Unite Fiji and New Generation have the same number of female candidates at two apiece and one from APP.
The approved candidates will be subjected to the appeals and objections phase which opens from 8am until 4 pm today.
In the event a registered voter wishes to file an objection to a nomination, they must deposit a fee of FJ$100 in cash. There are no fees for appeals. All appeals and objections filed with the Electoral Commission must be lodged by completing the approved forms. The Electoral Commission will not accept any other document. The EC will be accepting appeals and objections at 59 High Street, Toorak, Suva.
