COVID-19 in Fiji: 350 cases and 23 new deaths

Fiji’s Ministry of Health announced 350 cases overnight – 242 in the West and 108 in the central – and 23 deaths over four days, with 20 of the deaths recorded in the western division and three in the central.

Of the 23 victims – 9 are women and 14 men – aged between 43 and 85 years, twelve (12) were unvaccinated and 11 partially, having received their first doses.

Of the unvaccinated 12, five were declared dead upon arriving at a health facility, four died at home and two died between five and 16 days after their admission at a health facility. Of those who have received at least one jab of the vaccine, three were declared dead upon arrival, one died at home, one died on the same day of their admission and six died within one and five days of their admission.

    • Partially vaccinated, having received the first dose in late-June
    • Died at home on 15 August
  • 52-year-old woman, Sigatoka.
    • Unvaccinated
    • Declared dead on arrival at the Sigatoka Sub-Divisional Hospital on 11 August
  • 81-year-old man, Ba
    • Unvaccinated
    • He presented to the Ba Mission Hospital in severe respiratory distress. He died on the same day
  • 73-year-old man, Lautoka.
    • Partially vaccinated, having received the first dose in late-July
    • Died on 13 August, two days after admission
  • 62-year-old man, Lautoka
    • Partially vaccinated, having received first dose in early May
    • Died on 12 August, four days after admission
  • 85-year-old woman, Ba
    • Partially vaccinated, having received the first dose in late July
    • Presented to the Ba Mission Hospital in severe respiratory distress. She was transferred to the Lautoka Hospital.
    • Died on 13 August, two days after admission
  • 77-year-old woman, Lautoka
    • Partially vaccinated, having received the first dose in late July
    • Declared dead on arrival on 12 August at the Lautoka Hospital Emergency Department.

    • Partially vaccinated, having received the first dose early this month
    • Presented to the Lautoka Hospital in severe respiratory distress, dying one day after admission on 13 August
  • 78-year-old man, Lautoka

    • Declared dead on arrival at the Lautoka Hospital on 13 August.
  • 59-year-old woman, Ba
    • Partially vaccinated, having received the first dose early June
    • She presented to the Ba Mission Hospital in severe respiratory distress. She died on 15 August two days after her admission.
  • 75-year-old man, Tavua
    • Unvaccinated
    • Presented to the Tavua Hospital in severe respiratory distress, dying 16 days later
  • 86 year old man, Tavua
    • Unvaccinated
    • Declared dead on arrival at the Tavua Hospital on 13 August
  • 77-year-old woman, Nadi

    • Declared dead on arrival at the Nadi Hospital on 13 August
  • 84-year-old man, Sigatoka
    • Fully vaccinated
    • Presented to the Sigatoka Hospital in severe respiratory distress, and died on 14 August, five days after admission

    • Declared dead on arrival at the Sigatoka Hospital.
  • 46-year-old woman, Sigatoka.

  • 43-year-old man, Nadi.
    • Partially vaccinated, having received the first dose in late-June
    • He presented to the Nadi Hospital in severe respiratory distress on 15 August. He died on the same day.
  • 70-year-old woman, Tacirua
    • Unvaccinated
    • Died at home on 14 August
  • 56-year-old man, Tailevu
    • Unvaccinated
    • Died at home on 13 August
  • 65-year-old man, Ba
    • Unvaccinated
    • Died at home on 13 August
  • 74-year-old man, Nadi
    • Unvaccinated
    • Died at home on 12 August

With the newly reported deaths, Fiji has had 394 deaths due to COVID-19, with 392 of these happening during the outbreak that started in April this year. The national 7-day rolling average of COVID-19 deaths per day is eight. The 7-day rolling average of COVID-19 deaths in the Central Division is 5 and in the western division, 3. 

There have also been 208 deaths involving COVID-19 positive patients but whose deaths have been attributed to serious medical conditions that they had before they contracted COVID-19
