Cabinet Approves Review of Pesticides Act

Fiji’s Pesticide Act No. 41 of 1971, which governs the registration, sale, and labelling requirements of pesticides in the country, will be reviewed, approved by the Cabinet.

Pesticides, including insecticides, weedicides, and fungicides, are crucial for managing pests in agriculture but also pose risks.

The review aims to modernise and enforce legislation in line with international standards, covering the entire pesticide lifecycle from production to disposal. This process, led by a Working Group chaired by the Registrar of Pesticides, seeks to enhance food safety, protect farmers’ workplace safety, and safeguard the environment.

The outcomes, including draft legislation, will be presented to the Cabinet for consideration.
