A man in his 40s who allegedly made online threats, calling for the killing of a senior Fijian Government minister via social media, has been held overnight in a police station in Suva because his surety did not have cash on him to bail him out.
Suva Magistrates Court Judge Justice Joseph Daurewa ordered that Isikeli Tabakaucoro Komaisavai be remanded at the Totogo Police Station pending the payment of the agreed sum, before another court seating tomorrow.
In court this afternoon, the prosecution did not object to bail and had set out conditions including that Komaisavai refrained from making further social media postings and that he does not interfere with prosecution witness or the victim. Justice Daurewa then further ordered that Komaisavai deactivated his Facebook account and imposed a cash bail of $500, which the surety did not have in his possession today, prompting the accused’s remand.
Komaisavai’s surety needs to pay the bail and deactivate the FB account before tomorrow seating during which Justice Daurewa will hand out his bail ruling.
He is charged with one count of Causing Harm by Posting Electronic Communication. Komaisavai reportedly threatened Fiji’s Minister for Economy and Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.
