Fiji Police refute FB post claiming officers beat up a man

July 20, 2022

Fiji Police have denied a social media post’s claim that their officers in Labasa had beaten up a man, saying that they “took necessary action to subdue him.”

Authorities said that while intoxicated the man allegedly assaulted his 68-year-old mother in a domestic violence case that they were called to. In the event of arresting him, he allegedly turned on the officers, continued to threaten his mother, and refused to cooperate at which point, police said, attending officers took action.

Police said they have a statement from the man’s mother “refuting the claims made about the arresting officers.”

The man has since been charged with serious assault, resisting arrest, and assault causing actual bodily harm. His mother has also taken out a domestic violence restraining order against him. He is scheduled to appear before the Labasa Magistrates Court tomorrow.
