Youth claim of police assault in case of attempted robbery

Fiji Police have launched a dual investigation into a case of an attempted robbery at a pharmacy in Nepani, and another against their own after one of the suspects claimed he was assaulted by officers.

The complainant was among four youths who the director of the pharmacy had reported to authorities after seeing them near his premises allegedly armed with pinch bars at around 2pm yesterday.

In a statement, Police Commissioner Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho said upon arriving at the scene, the responding team from Valelevu Police Post found the place crowded with bystanders “where one of the suspects was handed over to Police where it was noted that he had sustained injuries.”

“A second suspect was found also with visible injuries and while in the process of being restrained resisted arrest. While these are initial information gathered into the alleged robbery case, the Internal Affairs Unit will also be looking into allegations made against police conduct.”

Brig-Gen Qiliho said as, with all reports lodged against police conduct, officers found to have abused his/her authority would be investigated, charged and produced like any other citizen.
