Younis Bese Nominated for Women’s HSBC 7s Rookie of the Year Award

Former Fiji Secondary School sprinter Younis Bese has been nominated for the Rookie of the Year Award at this weekend’s Women’s HSBC 7s Awards.

Bese burst onto the scene during the Dubai tournament in November last year, just a few months after joining the Fijiana Drua team. Her pace and speed have captured the attention of fans and experts alike, with one of her standout moments being a 70-meter dash-try at the Cape Town tournament in December 2022.

Since her debut, Bese has featured in 30 matches and scored nine tries in all.

Bese faces tough competition for the Rookie of the Year Award, with fellow nominees including New Zealand’s Jorja Miller and the United States’ Sammy Sullivan. Last year’s award saw Fiji halfback Reapi Ulunisau nominated alongside Australia’s Alysia Lefau-Fakaosilea, ultimately won by Australia’s Maddison Levi.

This time around, Ulunisau is a strong contender for the DHL Impact Player of the Year Award. Currently leading the standings ahead of the final leg of the 2022-23 Women’s 7s Series in Toulouse this weekend, she has amassed 398 points. In second place is Ana Maria Naimasi with 369 points, closely followed by 2022’s winner, Australia’s Charlotte Caslick, with 362 points.
