A 25-year-old man died in a road accident along the Kings Road near Teidamu this morning.
He was a passenger in a car driven by a woman, heading towards Ba when the accident occurred. The car allegedly veered onto the opposite lane and collided with a truck, resulting in the fatal outcome.
The victim and the driver were rushed to Lautoka Hospital, but he was pronounced dead on arrival. Investigations into the accident are ongoing, with the initial assessment pointing to speeding as the likely cause.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana said that speeding reduces the time for drivers to make safe decisions and increases the risk of severe injuries or fatalities. He also issued a reminder about the dangers of drunk driving, citing a fatal accident in Nadi on July 31 that was confirmed to be a result of drunk driving.
The road death toll has increased to 57 compared to 21 for the same period last year.
