Police arrest driver over fatal 2-vehicle accident in Nadi

Fiji Police have arrested a 27-year-old man believed to have been driving one of the two vehicles that allegedly hit a 61-year-old man in Nadi over the weekend, resulting in his death.

The man from Korovuto in Nadi was arrested at a car wash along the Nadi back road and remains in custody as investigations continue.

The accident happened close to midnight on Saturday. The deceased was a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped along the stretch of road near Navo, Malolo because they were overspeeding. He got off the vehicle and was crossing the road to where police traffic officers were when he was hit by the vehicle driven by the 27-year-old, the impact of which saw him land in the opposite lane where he was hit by another vehicle.

It is understood the 27-year-old may have left the scene because police had to launch a house-to-house and business visitation search yesterday to locate him. Word was sent out to garage owners to keep a lookout for any vehicle owner that may request repair or body works for their vehicle. Authorities also acquired the assistance of homeowners and business operators who have CCTV cameras in the hope of identifying the vehicle.
