NZ end Army unbeaten run, secure Cup quarterfinal spot

March 10, 2022

New Zealand scored a try in the first half to beat Army 5-0, on day one of the third round of the Women’s 7s Series that is underway at Lautoka’s Churchill Park, and in doing so ended the local side’s unbeaten run in the competition.

Boasting the services of Fiji 7s speedster and Olympians Reapi Uluinasau, Alowesi Nakosi and Ana Naimasi among others, Army entered the competition as favourites having won round two of the series in Sigatoka, which was also their first appearance in the competition.

Heading into this week’s round of the Fiji Rugby Union Fun Flavour sponsored 7s series, Army kept a clean slate of five wins from five games, after having won all of their games in Sigatoka, from the pool rounds through to the final where they beat Seahawks 26-15. However, the visitors had other ideas, ending their unbeaten run, thanks to a try via their playmaker and Olympian Shakira Baker.

The side went on to thrash Valkyries 33-7 in their second game to book their spot in the Cup quarterfinals. The Cup quarters is scheduled to start at 9am tomorrow. Army are still in the running for a spot in the top eight as well after a convincing 31-0 win over Marist in their second game.

Also around midday tomorrow will mark the start of the men’s competition.
