Newly launched report advocates for sustainable, equitable future

Dr. Natalia Kanem, Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), unveiled a new report titled “8 Billion Lives, Infinite Possibilities” at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva today.

The report sheds light on the opportunities and challenges faced by the world’s population and offers recommendations for policymakers to ensure a sustainable and equitable future for all.

The launch of this report is a significant milestone in the global pursuit of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and the improvement of billions of lives across the world.

In her statement, Dr. Kanem highlighted UNFPA’s commitment to supporting governments in their efforts, stating, “UNFPA has partnered with the United Nations to promote the quality of midwifery services, including supporting training activities and providing equipment.”

This visit to Fiji marks Dr. Kanem’s second trip to the country, with her last visit dating back to 2019. As part of her current visit, Dr. Natalia traveled to Makoi Maternity Unit and Nabavatu village in Dreketi.

Professor Biman Prasad, Fiji’s Minister for Finance and Statistics, expressed the government’s belief that “a well-designed national population policy, linked to various specific development focuses, can provide us with a deeper understanding of how we can design and implement effective policies.”

The report was developed by UNFPA’s Communications and Strategic Partnerships unit.
