Fiji’s Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga has appointed five interim trustees for the Fiji Rugby Union including former magistrate and Yasawa Rugby Union president Mosese Naivalu, and Investment Fiji chair Jenny Seeto.
The others named are former CEO of the Fiji Sports Commission, Peter Mazey, former Housing Authority CEO Alipate Naiorosui, along with accountant and long-serving Weightlifting Fiji official Sikeli Tuinamuana
In a statement Turaga said the trustees have been entrusted with the responsibility of addressing anomalies sorrounding FRU’s charitable trust status. They are required to present a solution at the Special General Meeting, the date of which has not been disclosed.
Furthermore, whilst the appointments are temporary, Turaga says they signal the beginning of a process aimed at bringing the “rugby house” into order. He reiterated that unless and until the FRU’s status as a charitable body is regularised, the Annual General Meeting (AGM) cannot be convened.
“All appointments are until the next Special General Meeting which will be called at the trustees’ discretion once the FRFUTB’s governance and legal compliance are consistent with the Charitable Trusts Act 1945 to the satisfaction of the Minister for Justice as the custodian of charitable trusts.”
