Fiji recently recorded more than 100 active coronavirus cases in a day, in a first, since the first case in March 2020. Out of the 187 cases recorded in the current outbreak since 18 April 2021, two of the four Makoi clusters are the source of the highest transmission, with over 70 cases collectively.
The two clusters of interest in Makoi emanate from the index Makoi case involving a soldier who had interacted with case 73, or the index case in Fiji’s current COVID19 outbreak, and the other cluster stemming from the Kalokalo Crescent household.
They collectively recorded at least 73 cases so far with links to another Makoi household, a case in Narere, the Nadali/Vunimono cluster, and the Muanikoso cluster incuding the Extra Supermarket related cases that also have links to 10 cases reported in Kinoya yesterday.
As is, the index Makoi case has had at least 34 cases and the Kalokalo Crescent case, at least 39. The other two Makoi clusters being the CDC-related cases and one that was reported at the Oceania Hospital in Suva on 13 May.
With 21 more cases reported yesterday, the second daily highest in coronavirus infections in the country, the total active case numbers went up to 108.
Majority of the recent cases have been recorded in Suva and Nausori and along the Princess Road,with cases in Lakena, two clusters in Tacirua with links to cases that have emerged in Nadawa and at 7 miles in Nasinu, 10 cases with links to the Samabula cluster, 10 cases in Waila, a case recorded at the Colo-i-Suva isolation facility, and three cases at the QEB Barracks in Nabua.
There have not been any new cases recorded in other parts of the country. In Lautoka at least, the last case recorded there was on 9 May emanating from the Saru cluster and in Nadi, on 7 May involving the son-in-law of the quarantine hotel worker otherwise known as case 74.
In view of 187 cases recorded in the country since 18 April 2021, Fiji is averaging at least five cases a day. On Sunday, 23 May 2021, the country recorded its daily highest in coronavirus cases at 24.
