Macuata welcomes its 7s Olympian Maqala

A traditional ceremony of welcome was accorded to Fiji 7s Olympian Gold medallist Sireli Maqala at the chiefly residence of the Turaga na Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere at Naduri.

In welcoming Maqala, Ratu Wiliame said the vanua of Caumatalevu was proud that the 7s star calls Labasa home.

“This is a dream come true for you and your family and we the people of Caumatalevu stand today to honour you and thank you for making us proud,” Ratu Wiliame said.

“You have shown everyone here that nothing is impossible when you have the heart to pursue your dream.” Ratu Wiliame said.

Maqala was accompanied to the chiefly village by his parents Sisa and Rosa and was welcomed by the elders and scores of children who hugged and shook his hand.

“I knew him while he was growing up in DelaiLabasa. He was always a humble and hard-working kid and I’m not surprised at all that he achieved the gold medal.” Ratu Wiliame said.
