The People’s Alliance, one of nine parties in the running to contest Fiji’s 2022 General Elections has continued to raise its concerns about the debt the Fijian Government has accumulated over the years.
Ajay Bhai Amrit, one of the party’s founding members says the current debt level is extremely worrying and the government continues to borrow huge amounts of money to keep the country going.
He says the reality is that the future of our country will suffer from the repayment of the debt.
“The question is who is going to repay this huge debt, the answer unfortunately is our children going forward. And another thing I would like to know is how much is our actual debt and how much are we paying every month,” Mr. Amrit said.
Meanwhile, while speaking at the ECOSOC Forum earlier this year, Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum stated that about 10% of Fiji’s debt burden is owed to climate disasters alone.
Mr. Khaiyum says Fiji’s debts are sustainable under any lens of analysis and while still borrowing money, Fiji has negotiated low-cost loans and attracted development assistance.
Apart from the debt level issue, Mr. Amrit has also highlighted issues in health and education that he believes PAP has the capability to improve if given the chance to be in government.
