Fijiana 15s named absolute gems of Fiji

The winning Fijiana 15s side has been hailed the country’s humble yet superheroes after winning the Oceania Championship in New Zealand last week.

Returning to State House in Suva yesterday to visit Fiji President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, the team was accorded a moving traditional ceremony of welcome.

“I look at you all today and my heart is filled with pride and emotion. You sit there wearing the scars of battle after winning your second international title, and I couldn’t be more proud,” Ratu Wiliame said.

“You are champions. You are heroes and you are very precious to Fiji.”

The team returned to Fiji with their second title, the Oceania Rugby Championship after winning the Super W series earlier.

“You work quietly on your preparations. You have faced many battles in your preparations in your personal lives, your families, and even as a team, but you have put that aside and given your term work your best.”

Ratu Wiliame assured the team of the country’s backing as they prepare for the World Cup.

“This is your next goal. Let nothing move you away from your focus on this which is the pinnacle of the rugby world.

“It is only a few months away so give it your best, look out for each other, and be assured of our support as a nation.”

The Fijiana XVs maintained a clean slate during the Oceania Rugby Champs, thumped Papua New Guinea 152-0, then Tonga 34-7 before edging Samoa 31-24 in their final game.
