Fiji confirms 241 cases, including 5 in Rakiraki and two more deaths

Fiji recorded 241 new infections today and two more people are dead from COVID19 – one of whom had only received the first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine early this month and the other was unvaccinated, health officials say.

The two deceased, both men aged 50 and 62, were reported to be in severe respiratory distress when they died. They were swabbed and tested positive for coronavirus.

Their deaths bring to 15 total number of people who have died from COVID19 since the outbreak started in April this year, and a cumulative total of 17 since Fii’s case in March 2020. One death that was announced last week is still under investigation to determine the cause of death.

The 50-year-old, who health officials say had received the first dose of the vaccine early this month is believed to have died at his residence in Newtown and was declared dead on arrival at the Valelevu Health Centre.

The unvaccinated deceased, a 62-year-old man, was one of the two cases that were under investigation to determine the cause of death. His death was announced on Friday 25 June. Health officials said the man lived along Grantham Rd and was seen at the FEMAT field hospital in respiratory distress. He died on the same day. According to Permanent Secretary for Health Dr James Fong, the deceased had been having respiratory symptoms, including shortness of breath, for at least a week before presenting to FEMAT.

Meanwhile of the 241 cases, five are prison officers from Suva at the Fiji Sugar Corporation Compound in Rakiraki. They were undergoing 14 days quarantine at the FSC compound, as part of requirements for essential movement from the red zone to the green zone, when they tested positive. Two hundred and thirty-six (236) were reported from the Lami-Suva-Nausori containment zone. Of the 236 cases, 17 are from new areas of interest being Fiji Times, Food City Suva, Matanisivoro Settlement, National Kidney Centre-Nadera, Suva City Council, Tamavua-i-Wai. The remaining cases are contacts of known cases, cases that were seen in screening clinics and were swabbed, and cases under investigation to determine possible sources of transmission.

Fiji also recorded eight COVID-19 positive patients that died from the pre-existing non-COVID-19 related illnesses that they had been receiving treatment for. There are currently 21 COVID-19 patients with severe illness admitted at CWM Hospital.
