The Fiji 7s men’s and Black Ferns have been crowned the 2021 Oceania 7s champs after finishing top of the men’s and women’s tables respectively while the Fijiana women’s ruggers finished third with three wins, one of which against Olympic champions, Australia.
Both teams finished the 2021 PacificAus Sport Oceania Sevens, at Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville in the weekend undefeated.
In their final games yesterday, the Fiji Men’s accounted for New Zealand Men’s 17-7 and the Blacks Ferns beat Australia Women’s 26-5.
In their final game against the New Zealand men’s, Jiuta Wainiqolo opened the scoring, capitalising on a brilliant pass from Jerry Tuwai. They extended their lead after the siren, despite an excellent try-saving effort from All Black Caleb Clarke. They kept the scoreboard ticking over, scoring after a penalty off the kick-off.
Kurt Baker eventually scored for the Kiwis, but fans and players alike erupted as Napolioni Bolaca booted the ball into the stands, a flawless display from the defending Olympic champions.
The Black Ferns 7s secured their Oceania crown in the first match of the day, downing the Fijiana 7s by 15.
