Fiji Anti-Corruption Office Confirms Receipt of Complaints Against Sayed-Khaiyum

January 18, 2024

Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) confirms having received three complaints against former FijiFirst General Secretary Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

In a statement, FICAC said that investigations are ongoing, and therefore, they cannot divulge details about the case publicly.

The complaints, referred by the Fijian Elections office to FICAC, were received on 29 September 2023. They were forwarded for legal assessment but could not proceed further in terms of an investigation following the death of former Commissioner Ratu David Toganivalu. As per sections 12 and 13 of the FICAC Act, all investigations and inquiries into the suspected or alleged occurrence of an offense are sanctioned by the Commissioner or Deputy Commissioner.

“Since the appointment of the Acting Deputy Commissioner in late November 2023, the investigation into the referral has commenced and is currently ongoing. Therefore, divulging any further details about the case publicly may jeopardise the outcome of the case.”
