Four of Fiji’s 7s Tokyo Olympic medallists are among those nominated for World Rugby’s Men’s and Women’s 7s Player of the Year awards.
Gold medallists Napolioni Bolaca, who scored the opening try of the Tokyo Olympics, and Jiuta Wainiqolo are in the running for the men’s 7s title with bronze medallists Alowesi Nakoci and Reapi Ulunisau (Fiji), who finished as the women’s top try scorer, nominated for the 7s female player of the year award.
Their inclusion World Rugby says ensures Fiji continues its record of having at least one player among the nominees since 2013.
Bolaca and Wainiqolo have been nominated for the men’s 7s title alongside New Zealand’s co-captain Scott Curry and Argentina’s Marcos Moneta who is also the top try-scorer with six in Tokyo. In the women’s category, Nakoci and Ulunisau are joined by New Zealand captain Sarah Hirini and France’s Anne-Cécile Ciofani.
Voting is open with fans deciding the winners of the two 7s titles.
The other awards offered by World Rugby are the Men’s and Women’s 15s Players of the Year, the Breakthrough Player of the Year, Men’s and Women’s Tries of the Year and the Coach of the Year.
