Delana Named Marist 7s U18 Best Player

For Aniq Delana, playing rugby is second nature.

The Marist Brothers High School student scooped the Best Player award in the U18 Category of the Marist Sevens separately sponsored by Total Energies.

The boys from Kaunikuila won all their pool games and trumped Lami Cavaliers in the final beating them 14 – 5 to take the first prize.

“It wasn’t easy. These other teams had obviously been playing 7s and so we knew what we were up against.”

“We decided as a team that even though we were able to win this our first ever 7s tournament, it is important that we stay grounded and that we recognize the power in humility. That is what we are taught at Marist, to be aware of those around us, embrace the learnings and be humble.”

When asked about his motivation for the game, Delana without hesitation dedicated his win to his mother.

“My mum’s name is Lynette Oti and she has been the person that drives me to do my best whether its only at training or at my games, Mum is always there so getting the best player award is all for her”

The tournament was the first time the school fielded a side which is being coached by former Flying Fijians fullback Norman Ligairi.
