COVID in Fiji: 682 new cases and six new deaths

Fiji’s Ministry of Health announced 682 new cases and six new deaths on Viti Levu tonight, totalling 36,252 and 294 respectively into the 17th week since the outbreak in April.

Of the 682 cases, 193 were recorded in the western division and 489 in the central division.

There were 297 new recoveries overnight, bringing up the total number of people who have recovered to 11,798. Active cases amount to 24,070 of which 19,154 are in the central division and 4,916 in the West.

There have been a total of 36,322 cases in Fiji since the first case was reported in March 2020.

Deaths
Six new COVID-19 deaths for the period of 5 August- 6 August. Three of the deaths were in the central division, and three from the western division. 

  • 18-year-old woman, Suva
    • Died at home on 5 August.
    • Her family reported that she had a cough five days prior to her presentation.
    • She was not vaccinated.
  • 75-year-old man, Nausori.
    • Presented to the CWM hospital in severe respiratory distress on 5 August.
    • Died on the same day
    • Partially vaccinated, having received the first dose of the vaccine in early July.
  • 77-year-old man, Suva.
    • Presented to the CWM hospital in severe respiratory distress.
    • His condition worsened in the hospital and he died on 7 August, six days after admission.
    • He was not vaccinated.   
  • 50-year-old woman, Lautoka.
    • She presented to the Lautoka Hospital in respiratory distress.
    • Her condition worsened at the hospital and she died on 5 August, seven days after admission.
    • She was not vaccinated. 
  • 85 year old woman, Lautoka.
    • Presented to the Lautoka Hospital in respiratory distress.
    • Her family reported that she had a fever and cough two days prior to presentation.
    • She died on 6 August, two days after admission.
    • Partially vaccinated, having received the first dose in late July.
  • 59-year-old woman, Lautoka.
    • Presented to the Lautoka Hospital in respiratory distress.
    • Her family reported that she had a fever, cough and shortness of breath one week prior to presentation.
    • Her condition worsened at the hospital and she died on 6 August, two days after admission

There have been five more deaths involving COVID-19 positive patients, but whose deaths have been classified as non-COVID deaths, having been caused by \serious pre-existing medical conditions.

With today’s newly reported deaths, there have now been 296 deaths due to COVID-19 in Fiji, with 294 of these deaths during the outbreak that started in April this year. The 7-day rolling average of COVID-19 deaths per day is six.  Fiji has also have recorded 158 COVID-19 positive patients who died from serious medical conditions.

Hospitalisations
There are currently 292 COVID-19 patients admitted to the hospital. In the West, 58 patients are admitted to the Lautoka hospital. In Suva, 72 patients are admitted at the FEMAT field hospital, and 162 admitted at CWM hospital, St Giles, and Makoi. Sixty-six (66) patients are considered to be in severe condition, and 10 are in critical condition. 

Screening Update
A total of 5,338 individuals were screened and 642 swabbed at the stationary screening clinics in the last 24 hours, bringing Fiji’s cumulative total to 421,982 individuals screened and 75,175 swabbed to date. As of 6 August,, the mobile screening teams screened a total of 2,509 individuals and swabbed 94. This brings the cumulative total to 780,843 individuals screened and 68,742 swabbed by the mobile teams. 

Testing update
A total of 292,879 samples have been tested since this outbreak started in April 2021, with 335,740 tested since testing began in March 2020. 2899 tests have been reported for 5 August 5. The national 7-day daily test average is 3234 tests per day or 3.7 tests per 1,000 population. The national 7-day average daily test positivity is 30.8 %.  

Vaccination Update
As of the 0th August, 508,796 adults in Fiji have received their first dose of the vaccine and 175,570 have received their second doses. This means that 86.7% of the target population have received at least one dose and 29.9% are now fully vaccinated nationwide.

Epidemic Outlook
The 7-day average of new cases per day is 934 cases per day or 1056 cases per million population per day.
