COVID-19 Fiji: Unvaccinated make up majority of COVID-19 deaths

The majority of the people who died from COVID-19 during the outbreak were not vaccinated.

Of the 518 people who died, 78 per cent had not received a jab – including 12 COVID-19 deaths announced last night, 21 per cent were partially vaccinated, and 0.8 per cent fully vaccinated.

Four of the 12 deaths announced last night, were recorded in the western division and eight in the central division. Of the eight deaths in the central division, three were reported for the month of July as the formal issuance of the death certificates was delayed.

There have now been 520 deaths due to COVID-19 in Fiji, with 518 of these deaths during the outbreak that started in April this year. As of 1 September, the national 7-day rolling average of COVID-19 deaths per day is four. The 7-day rolling average for COVID-19 deaths per day in the central division is one and in the western division, 3.

Non-COVID 19 Death

Nineteen (19) other COVID-19 positive patients, whose deaths have been attributed to other causes, also died during the reporting period. There have been a total of 338 COVID-19 positive patients who have died from the serious medical conditions that they had before they contracted COVID-19; these are not classified as COVID-19 deaths.

Hospitalisations

There are currently 195 COVID-19 patients admitted to the hospital. Of these, 82 are admitted at the Lautoka Hospital, 14 at the FEMAT field hospital, and 99 collectively admitted across CWM hospital, St Giles, and Makoi. Thirty (3) patients are either in severe or critical condition.
