Fiji’s booster vaccine coverage has increased by more than 10 per cent as of Monday 6 June.
According to the Ministry of Health, 43 per cent of the eligible population have received their booster doses, equating to 134,719 individuals, up from 30.2 per cent that was reported in April and May.
The ministry remains hopeful that more people especially those eligible, having been fully vaccinated for more than three months, will come forward to receive their booster doses. The advise is based on findings that immunity from two doses weakens over time.
“It is well documented that immunity from COVID-19 vaccination wanes over time and the effectiveness of protection against COVID-19 after a primary series of AstraZeneca vaccination is lower than with other COVID-19 vaccine products, especially against the Omicron variant of concern,” the ministry stated.
The ministry has also launched a booster campaign aimed to administer 250,000 doses of Pfizer vaccine to those who have completed the primary series (doses 1 and 2) > 3 months prior but have not yet received a booster dose.
“This requires a minimum of 32,000 doses to be administered weekly for 8 weeks from 1 June to 31 July 2022.”
Meanwhile, Fiji recorded 41 new cases of seven were recorded in Friday 3 June, 10 on Saturday 4 June, 11 new cases were recorded on Sunday 5 June and 13 new cases as of 8am yesterday Monday 6 June.
Of the 41 cases recorded, 17 cases were recorded in the Central Division; 21 cases were recorded in the Western Division; three cases were recorded in the Northern, and nil cases were recorded in the Eastern Division. The national 7-day rolling average of cases as of 2 June is 14 daily cases. The Central Division cases constitute 67% of the cumulative total cases nationally, with the Western division making up 28%, 3% in the Northern Division, and 2% in the Eastern Division.
Fiji’s deaths from COVID-19 remain at 864 whilst deaths with COVID-19 stand at 942.
