A Fiji Corrections Officer has been suspended following a joint investigation by the Correction and Police dog units that uncovered his alleged involvement in a drug network with known local drug traffickers, including an individual implicated in the infamous 3-tonne drug bust in Legalega, Nadi.
According to a FCS statement, a search of the officer’s residence in Lautoka yielded significant findings.
Authorities retrieved a video depicting an inmate using the officer’s phone inside the Lautoka Remand Center to arrange the delivery of marijuana, suki (a local tobacco), and ice (methamphetamine). Further inspection revealed plastic materials used for drug packaging inside the toilet, $400 in cash suspected to be proceeds of crime, and $44 worth of Digicel recharge vouchers.
The officer was apprehended in a vehicle with a known ex-convict, a prominent figure in the local drug trade, previously held at the Lautoka Remand Center on drug-related charges. Other evidence retrieved from the officer’s phone included photos of him with one of the individuals implicated in the infamous 3-tonne drug bust in Legalega, Nadi.
He has also been banned from entering any correctional facilities pending further investigation.
The Fiji Correction Service reiterated its commitment to upholding the law and ensuring the safety and security of the community.
The investigation is ongoing, and the authorities have pledged to leave no stone unturned in their efforts to dismantle the drug network and bring all involved to justice.
