Six thousand backpacks and stationery are set to be delivered to children in Tropical Cyclone Yasa-affected areas in the North and maritime schools.
Made possible through various stakeholders and private organisations, the assistance will benefit, among others, students in the Nadogo, Seaqaqa, Bua South, Bua North and Wailevu communities.
TC Yasa severely damaged 30 schools in the Northern Division, affecting close to 4000 students. Over 1500 students in maritime schools will be assisted as well.
The Ministry of Education will coordinate this assistance in partnership with the Fiji Teachers Union, Fiji Muslim League, Sathya Sai Service Organisation of Fiji, Yaadein Vision, SODELPA, Suva Forklift, TISI Sangam and UNICEF.
“The interest we continue to receive despite the current economic situation is overwhelming and we are thankful to all organisations that have come forward in our support,” Minister for Education Rosy Akbar said.
Schools in other areas that require similar assistance will need to provide the ministry with a needs-analysis report.
Organisations that wish to provide similar assistance are requested to contact the ministry.
