Heavy rain alert issued for parts of Fiji

March 2, 2022

Fiji’s weather office has issued a heavy rain alert for parts of Viti Levu, Vanua Levu and the Yasawa, and the Mamanuca groups.

This is due to a trough of low pressure that is expected to affect the Fiji group from the West later tomorrow.

Areas expected to be affected include Bua, Nasau, Lekutu, Batiri, Dreketi, Seaqaqa, Labasa, Nadogo, Dogotuki, Tavua through Rakiraki to Dobuilevu, Lomawai to Nadi through Lautoka to Ba, interior of, Ba and Nadroga- Navosa, and the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups.

For the rest of the Fiji group, occasional showers and afternoon thunderstorms are expected.

Localised heavy falls may lead to flash flooding and overflow of drainage systems in low-lying areas, especially in low-lying areas of Western Vanua Levu and Northwestern Vanua Levu, Northern and Western Viti Levu, and the Western interior of Viti Levu.

Meanwhile, tropical depression 09F (TD09F) was located over open waters about 460 kilometers southeast of New Caledonia at midday today. TD09F continues to move southeast and has a high chance of developing into a tropical cyclone in the next 24 hours.

At this stage, the Fiji Met says TD09F poses no direct threat to the Fiji group, however, it will continue to monitor the weather event and update warnings and forecasts accordingly.
