Ten corrections officers will appear before a magistrates court in Suva today charged over the assault and subsequent suicide of a prisoner in 2019.
Fiji’s Director of Public Prosecutions Christoper Pryde sanctioned charges against the 10 officers namely Isei Rakaso, Pita Raikoso, Josefa Boletakibureta, Waisea Satini, Lemeki Koroi, Joji Raqamate, Ledua Tikoigau, Nemani Vasuvulagi and Apisai Naqamu.
The 10 officers are accused of assaulting Seremaia Niudole Momo and caused him to commit suicide on 20 February 2019 at the Naboro Minimum Corrections Centre.
“The charges consist of assault causing actual bodily harm, acts intended to cause grievous harm and complicity in the suicide of another,” the ODPP said. “It is alleged that these officers assaulted the prisoner and procured his suicide.”
