The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) is conducting an investigation into the death of a 60-year-old inmate over the weekend.
Responding to queries, the FCS stated the deceased who was serving time at FCS’ Naboro Minimum facility had a history of issues relating to his heart.
“We are saddened and do confirm that a 60-year old inmate passed away at the CWM Hospital on Saturday 10- February, 2024. The deceased inmate is a known case of cardiomegaly and hypertension,” the FCS said.
“The FCS is obligated first and foremost to inform the family when the death of an inmate occurs which has been done just hours after the incident.”
Regarding the circumstances surrounding his death, the FCS says it has “procedures and protocols in place when such an incident occurs and is now conducting its own investigations into the matter.”
“A Board of Inquiry has been deployed to investigate all circumstances surrounding the case.”
