Stay Away From ‘Blue’ Walu Bay River: Health

July 12, 2023

Fijian authorities have warned the public to steer clear of the Walu Bay River after a chemical spill from a nearby company.

The spill which health authorities have identified as chemical dye turned the river blue. It prompted officials to advise against any contact with the affected waters, including handling aquatic life and flora that may have been exposed to the chemicals.

The leaked chemical resulted from a ruptured drum from the company site, which ultimately found its way into the river, the Ministry of Health said in a statement.

Samples of the chemical have since been sent for analysis to determine its exact nature, and further details and specific precautionary measures, if needed, the ministry adds will be provided in a follow-up advisory.

“We assure the public that the Ministry of Health and Medical Services is closely monitoring the situation and working in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and other relevant authorities to address this issue promptly and effectively. Our primary concern is the well-being of the community, and we will continue to provide timely updates and guidance as the situation progresses.”

To address the spill and potential environmental impact, the Ministry of Environment will hold a meeting with the company responsible to determine the appropriate course of action and explore possible clean-up options.
