Fiji AG urges inmates to embrace values

April 21, 2023

Fiji’s Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Siromi Turaga, urged inmates during his visit to the Nasinu Corrections Centre to embrace the values instilled in them and utilise them as they reintegrate into society.

“Many who have crossed these paths are now successful, some are now lecturers in university,” Turaga told inmates, while touring the facility accompanied by delegates from UNDP.

The purpose of the visit was to observe the programs and developments implemented at the rehabilitation facility, which include courses in automotive engineering, music lessons, and basic engineering.

One notable program at the facility is a four-week course that focuses on true identity, allowing inmates to engage in self-reflection.

Established in 1971, the centre comprises eight dorms, accommodating between 144 and 168 inmates. The youngest inmate is 18 years old and the oldest, 87.
