Fiji’s President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere this morning issued the writ for Fiji’s 2022 General Election to Electoral Commission Chair Mukesh Nand in Suva.
The issuance of the writ formalises the announcement that was made yesterday about the country’s elections to be held on 14 December 2022.
Today’s ceremony at the Government House also marked the end of certain electoral activities and the commencement of the next steps in the electoral process as well as signals the start of the countdown to election day during which the nine registered political parties including the governing FijiFirst party are expected to also step up their campaign.
Closing today at 6 pm is the voter registration process together with the upgrading of cards and updating of voter details, likewise, political parties’ registration.
To facilitate the voter registration process, the Fijian Elections Office has operational until 6 pm 63 hotspots in towns and cities across the country.
“After the close of registration, you will not be able to change your address or your polling venue and you will not be able to correct your name if it is not correct, and you will also not be able to register as a new voter,” Mr. Saneem said.
Opening tomorrow as per FEO’s calendar timeline is the nomination of candidates by political parties, the itinerary for which the elections office will outline. Postal voting applications which opened yesterday will also remain open until 5 pm on 23 November. As of 8 am today, Mr. Saneem said it had received 35 applications.
Polling will begin at 7.30 am on Wednesday 14 December, and will close after the last voter in the queue at 6 pm has voted. The writ will be returned to President Ratu Wiliame on or before 28 December 2022.
