Weather: Low to moderate chances of tropical cyclone developing: Fiji Met

January 5, 2022

A low pressure system formed near Vanuatu and expected to linger over open waters between Vanuatu and Fiji over the next few days could strengthen to a tropical cyclone, Fiji’s Met Office says.

The country’s weather office says there is a low risk of it developing into a tropical cyclone between now and Sunday, increasing to a moderate risk from Monday.

As a result of the system, heavy rain and strong wind are to be expected over Fiji from Friday and into the weekend.

In the meantime, a heavy rain alert is in force for the whole of Fiji, and for the Lau Group and Vanua Levu including its sorrounding waters, a strong wind warning has also been issued.

Everyone is advised to take precaution given the impacts of the anticipated weather conditions including flash flooding of low lying areas, lightning strikes during thunderstorms, landslides, and reduced visibility for motorists and at sea.
