Fiji Outrigger has announced the return of the Wai Tui International Regatta, an iconic outrigger canoeing event set to be held in Nadi on 3–6 April 2026.
The competition, a major fixture in the 1990s and early 2000s, is being revived with the aim of re-establishing Fiji as a regional hub for Va’a.
The event was founded by the late Colin Philp, whose contribution to Fiji’s canoeing culture organisers say remains central to the sport’s growth.
“His legacy continues to inspire the paddling community,” said Fiji Outrigger president Loretta St Julian-Ooms. “The event’s revival honours his pioneering contribution to Fiji’s ocean-sport heritage.”
The announcement follows Fiji’s strong performances at the 2025 IVF World Distance Championships and Pacific Mini Games.
St Julian-Ooms said the sport was experiencing rapid growth across the region.
“The Wai Tui International is a chance to reconnect with our roots and showcase how far the sport has come in Fiji.”
The 2026 regatta will feature V1 and V6 races across junior, open and masters divisions, along with cultural exchanges and opportunities for local businesses to benefit from sports tourism. Funding support from the Fiji National Sports Commission, the event has attracted early interest from paddlers across the Pacific, Australia, New Zealand and the United States.
Fiji Outrigger’s domestic calendar continues to grow, with record participation in junior regattas, sprint events, and club development programs.
Preparations are now underway, with organisers inviting regional partners and sponsors to join the event.
