UNHCR pledges support for Fiji
THE United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is determined to strengthen ties with the Fijian government in climate change adaptation and resilience building.
Louise Aubin, the new Regional Representative of the UN agency, reaffirmed the sentiments during her courtesy call on the government earlier this week.
Ms Aubin who is based in Canberra, Australia visited the Permanent Secretary of the Office of the Prime Minister, Sugar Industry Mr Yogesh J. Karan in Suva.
Mr Karan is currently the Acting Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs.
The Fijian government is the recognized leader in the search for solutions around issues of displacement faced by communities amidst the climate crisis, a statement from the government said.
The government statement quotes Ms Aubin as saying the UNHCR is “pleased with Fiji’s commitment at the global stage to advocate for issues that are aligned to the mandates of UNHCR.”
“It’s clear that Fiji has always been a friend of the campaign with its leadership role and commitment to further eradicate statelessness,” Ms Aubin elaborated.
