Two children dead, one missing and another in critical form

Fiji Police are investigating four separate incidents that happened over the weekend involving four children, two of whom died, another is missing at sea, whilst a seven-year-old girl is fighting for her life in hospital.

Dead are two boys aged 17 and five, the former was on a horse and riding along the Queens Road near Sabeto when he was hit by a truck, while the latter drowned while swimming with cousins in a river near Navakaka village in Savusavu on Saturday.

The teenager was taken to Nadi Hospital and later Lautoka Hospital where he died yesterday morning. Police took in the driver for questioning before releasing him as investigations continue. In the case of the five-year-old who drowned, police are awaiting a post-mortem.

In another possible drowning case, a 15-year-old boy has been missing at sea since Saturday. The 15-year-old boy did not make it back to land while swimming with friends in waters near Solkope Island, Kalvaka in Rotuma. According to Police, the group swam across Solkope Island. His friends made it back, but he did not due to strong currents.

Search efforts conducted since Saturday have been unsuccessful and will continue today.

The fourth child, a seven-year-old girl, was among 53 people in a bus that collided with a locomotive near Navo in Nadi around 5 pm yesterday. Seven passengers were admitted to the hospital, four including the seven-year-old remain in critical condition at the Lautoka Hospital. Three others admitted to the Nadi Hospital are in stable condition.
