Tropical Depression Upgraded to Cyclone Tam, Tracks South Away from Fiji

April 15, 2025

Tropical Depression 11F has been officially upgraded to Tropical Cyclone Tam (11F), as the system intensifies while moving southward away from Fiji and Vanuatu.

It has been classified as a Category 1 tropical cyclone, with sustained winds of 34–47 knots (63–87 km/h) and central pressure above 985 hPa.

According to a route map released by the Fiji Meteorological Service, Tam is not expected to directly impact Fiji. However, the Fiji Meteorological Service has issued a Heavy Rain Warning for parts of the country as a separate but related trough of low pressure brings widespread rainfall and potential flooding.

Heavy Rain Warning remains in force for the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, Viti Levu, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands.

A Heavy Rain Alert remains in force for the rest of Fiji.

Forecasts indicate periods of rain, heavy at times, with a few thunderstorms, especially over the western and southern parts of the country. Elsewhere, occasional heavy rain is expected with possible thunderstorms.

Significant rainfall over the last 24 hours includes:

  • Lautoka – 41.5mm
  • Rarawai – 42.0mm

The Fiji Met Office warns of possible flash flooding in low-lying areas and informal settlements, along with surface flooding in urban zones prone to poor drainage.

Motorists are urged to take extra caution as water over roads, flooded crossings, and reduced visibility are likely to disrupt traffic flows.

Meanwhile, Cyclone Tam is forecast to weaken into a tropical low by late Wednesday as it continues on its path away from Fiji.

TC Tam is the latest named system in the 2024–2025 South Pacific cyclone season. The next Tropical Cyclone Threat Track Map and Heavy Rain Bulletin are expected to be issued later tonight.
