Three political parties risk deregistration over financial accounts

Fiji’s Registrar of Political Parties today suspended Unity Fiji, Freedom Alliance and HOPE for what he said their failure to submit audited accounts within the stipulated timeframe.

Section 26 (2) of the Political Parties Act, requires parties to submit audited accounts within three (3) months of the end of the financial year.

The last date for the submission of these accounts was 31 March 2021, the Registrar said.

“As to date, none of these parties [has] submitted their accounts to the Registrar and in considering the gravity of the breach, the Registrar has found it fit to suspend the parties to protect the public interest.”

The parties risk deregistration if they fail to address the matter within 60 days.
