Teenager who stole water dispensers gets suspended sentence

A high school student who admitted stealing two water dispensers from Novotel Hotel in Lami in August this year has been handed a suspended sentence.

The teenager and the eldest of three siblings was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment, suspended for two years.

Suva High Court Judge Justice Daniel Goundar also warned him not to reoffend during the suspension term.

In deciding on the matter, Justice Goundar noted that he is a young first time offender, he cooperated with police, showed remorse, accepted responsibility for his actions, and did not resort to physical violence when carrying out the crime stating that he is very likely to rehabilitate if given a chance.

Court documents show that the 18-year-old intends to continue with his studies when classroom learning resumes.

Meanwhile, authorities have also recovered the water dispensers.
