Senior housing officer charged with corruption

A senior technical officer at the Rural Unit for the Ministry of Housing & Community Development who allegedly solicited and accepted $100 from a private individual two months ago has been charged with corruption.

Joji Waqamailau appeared before Magistrate Jeremaia Savou in the Anti Corruption Court this afternoon where he was granted bail and ordered not to re-offend whilst on bail. He was also ordered to surrender all travel documents, not change his residential address without prior approval from the court and not to approach or interfere with witnesses. A stop departure order has also been issued against him.

He is charged with one (1) count of Soliciting and Accepting An Advantage. It is alleged that on or about 30 September Waqamailau solicited and accepted an advantaged of $100 from a private individual.

The matter has been adjourned to 19 November for the second phase of disclosures to be served.
