Sashi Kiran was sworn in this morning as the new Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection.
Kiran succeeds Lynda Tabuya, who was dismissed from the role by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka yesterday.
Rabuka cited a breach of ministerial standards as the reason for the dismissal.
“In light of the recent events concerning [her]conduct and in consideration of:(i) the Oath she has taken as a Minister; and(ii) standards expected of any Minister, I have decided to exercise the power conferred upon me by Section 92(3)(b) of the Constitution, to dismiss her as a Minister, with immediate effect,” Tabuya said.
“This is not a decision I have taken lightly, but one that is necessary in the best interest of the people that we serve.”
Tabuya will remain a Member of Parliament.
Until her appointment Kiran served as Assistant Minister to Tabuya. She brings a wealth of experience to the role, having founded the Foundation for Rural Integrated Enterprises and Development (FRIEND Fiji), an NGO based in Lautoka that focuses on social welfare, rural development, and community empowerment.
Meanwhile, the ceremony today took place at the State House in Suva and was officiated by President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu.
