Following the grounding of RFNS Puamau in Fulaga, Lau, the Fiji Navy is making changes to its operations including the training aspect of preparations for its personnel.
Speaking at the Republic of Fiji Navy’s 49th Anniversary celebrations at the Togalevu base today, Commander Humphrey Tawake said the changes are being made to ensure the men and women of the Fiji Navy are better equipped for the roles they carry out.
“Just last month we had the unfortunate grounding of RFNS Puamau in Fulaga. Fortunately, there was no injury or lives lost. The findings of the RFMF BOI is a concern to me despite the professional development and resources provided to the Navy.”
“As part of the BOI findings, reforms and minor adjustements to our operation requirements and structure as soon as practically possible to ensure compliance to processes and best navigational standards, enhanced management processes, and ships safety.”
Commander Tawake also said they will also set up of an audit that will carry regular audit checks on all aspects of the Fiji Navy’s operations.
“This will include the review of Navy training across ranks and appointments, key command team appointment criteria and leadership. Further a dedicated Navy compliance and audit unit will be established to report directly to the Commander Navy to provide oversight and regular audit on operation, training, administration, finance and logisitical standards.”
