Record COVID-19 numbers at screening clinics/health facilities: Fiji MOH

More than half of the 1,200 confirmed coronavirus cases, a new daily high, recorded in Fiji yesterday were from screening clinics and health facilities.

Of the 1,200 new cases, 657 were detected at 629 facilities in the Central Division and 28 in the Western Division. In the Central Division, the Valelevu and Raiwaqa health centres topped numbers at 146 and 104 respectively.

The same day, Fiji’s Ministry of Health announced the death of 15 more COVID-19 positive patients, five of which were confirmed to have been caused by COVID-19, two linked to pre-existing medical conditions and eight under investigation to determine the cause of death.

According to health officials, none of the five COVID-19 confirmed deceased were vaccinated, three of them died at home.

The new COVID-19 deaths bring to 72 the number of people who have died from coronavirus since the April outbreak. In the same period, 31 other COVID-19 positive patients have died, but whose deaths have been linked to medical conditions they had prior to contracting coronavirus. Eight others are still being investigated to determine cause of death.

    • Her family reported that she was feeling unwell with generalized body pain, weakness and a sore throat for 10 days.

    • Male, 62 years old, from Tacirua
    • Died at the CWM Hospital on 13 July
    • His family reported that he was unwell with fever, cough and generalised weakness for three days prior.
  • Deceased 3
    • Female, 66, Nabua
    • Died at home on 13 July.
    • Her family reported that she was feeling unwell with a cough and shortness of breath for three days.
  • Deceased 4
    • Female, 60, Verata
    • Died at home on 13 July
  • Deceased 5
    • Female, 78, Nauluvatu
    • Died at healthcare facility on 13 July.
    • She was retrieved from home by a medical team and transferred to a healthcare facility. She was noted to be in severe respiratory distress.

As of the 14 July, 377,090 adults have received their first dose of the vaccine and 73,127 have received their second doses. The 7-day average of new cases per day is 746 cases per day or 844 cases per million population per day. There have been 13,816 cases during the outbreak that started in April 2021. We have recorded a total of 13,886 cases in Fiji since the first case was reported in March 2020. There have been 2,748 recoveries since 2020.
