The Ratu Filise rugby 7s team from Namatakula in Nadroga clinched victory in the Koronamaya 7s final in Navosa today, edging out the home side, after whom the tournament is named, with a close 14–12 win.
The two-day competition kicked off yesterday with 16 teams, including Ratu Filise, a powerhouse in the local sevens scene and one of the senior squads.
Tournament director Ravuama Latilevu praised all the teams for their effort, saying their commitment reflects a strong passion for growing grassroots rugby in Fiji.
“The tournament fulfilled its mission of creating a platform for emerging rugby players from the highlands and surrounding communities to demonstrate their skills, gain exposure, and compete alongside some of Fiji’s respected 7s outfits. The passion displayed on the field reflected the spirit and pride of Navosa rugby and highlighted the potential of future stars rising from grassroots levels.”
Latilevu said having teams such as Ratu Filise and Spearhead Yalovata added to the success of the tournament.
“The Koronamaya 7s Organizing Committee extends its sincere appreciation to all participating teams, match officials, volunteers, sponsors, community leaders, and the supporters who filled Vatureba Park with unwavering energy over the two days. Your collective contribution ensured the smooth running and overall success of the 2025 tournament.”
Among the participating teams, well-established clubs such as Ratu Filise, Tubakula, and Spearhead Yalovata added intensity and high-level competition to the tournament. Their presence elevated the quality of play and provided an inspiring challenge for the additional 13 grassroots teams that filled the roster vying for the $5000 price money.”
“The Koronamaya 7s Tournament remains committed to its long-term vision of promoting development pathways for young players, supporting community engagement, and contributing to the wider Navosa Rugby development projects.”
The tournament was held at the Vatureba Park in Navosa.
