The island of Rabi in the Northern division is currently hosting a two week High Court sitting for the first time in its history.
Chief Registrar Tomasi Bainivalu said this was a welcome move to take the sitting to the people.
“The initiative forms part of the judiciary’s ongoing commitment to decentralize judicial services and ensure that all Fijians, regardless of geography, have effective and equitable access to the country’s appellate and superior court system.”
“By extending court sittings to remote and outer islands, the judiciary aims to reduce barriers to justice, ease travel burdens on litigants and strengthen public confidence in the rule of law.”
Acting Justice Penijamini Lomaloma is presiding over proceedings which began on Monday and will conclude on Friday 5 December.
