Probe Into Young Woman’s Death Following Allegations of Negligence

July 24, 2024

Fiji’s Ministry of Health has launched an investigation into claims of medical negligence after the death of a young woman who was treated for severe bronchial asthma at Nadi Hospital.

On July 13, 2024, Harshika Devi sought emergency care at Nadi Hospital after experiencing a severe asthma attack. Her mother, Munita Devi, took to social media alleging that Harshika received improper treatment, which involved excessive administration of Atrovent Solution by a trainee doctor.

According to Mrs. Devi, there were significant delays and a lack of consultation with senior medical staff during her daughter’s treatment. She claims that despite her daughter’s deteriorating condition, she was not transferred to Lautoka Hospital in a timely manner and was not allowed to accompany her daughter in the ambulance.

Upon arrival at Lautoka Hospital, Harshika was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit but passed away the following morning. Mrs. Devi is seeking answers about the exact circumstances of her daughter’s death and has called for an investigation into the treatment she received.

The Ministry of Health responded with a statement today expressing condolences to the Devi family and outlining the steps for a formal investigation.

“The Ministry will engage in an official investigation if there is an official complaint,” the statement read.

“The Ministry has established procedures to address grievances from families, and we will coordinate with the family to allow that process to occur.”

In the same statement, the ministry highlighted the importance of using official channels for lodging complaints and highlighted the toll-free number 157 for such grievances.

“We kindly remind the public that while we appreciate feedback, social media may not be the most effective platform for addressing complaints regarding the Ministry’s services. We encourage constructive feedback through the appropriate channels.”

As the investigation proceeds, the case has sparked discussions on social media about the standards of care in Fijian hospitals and the treatment of emergency cases. Many are calling for greater accountability and transparency within the healthcare system.
