Police are continuing investigations into the alleged forced eviction of a family from Lovu Seaside settlement in Lautoka last week.
Police confirmed yesterday that more files had been received and were being scrutinized before further action will be taken.
Residents at the settlement ever since the incident residents are being extra cautious since the incident happened.
Sheila Wati, 59, said Lovu was already a hard place to live given that it was far from town, built around mangroves and the issue between the two parties has thrown most people into a panic and uncertainty.
“When people are angry, they can do anything. I don’t know who is right and who is wrong but their actions can cause alot of us problems.”
Late last week, Police confirmed investigating the alleged forced eviction.
Divisional Police Commander West, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Iakobo Vaisewa, confirmed receiving a comÂplaint from a tenant, Sofia Farzana, who claimed her landlord forced her to vacate her home.
On social media last week, Farzana uploaded a video showing the landlord pulling a wire fence that surrounded the tenant’s house. The man later claimed that Farzana had sold the land without his consent.
He reportedly demanded proof of a lease title bearing her name. Farzana claims her grandmother bought the land in 1998 and transferred the title to her before she passed away.
“I was born here. I was brought up by my grandmother. She bought this land and built this house. She has transferred this property under my name,” she claimed.
She further alleged the landowners demanded $15,000 to repurchase the land.
“They said if we want to stay here, we must buy the land again with a new title. This is so unfair.”
A Lautoka City Council staff said they were aware of what happened but have left it to Police to investigate. Lovu falls within the city boundary.
